Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, also known as Metro Man, is an Indian Engineering service officer credited for his work on Konkan Railways, Delhi Metro and Kochi Metro. Throughout his career he has excelled in finishing transport projects with high efficiency and effectiveness and completing projects ahead of deadline.
His first major work was when he was put in-charge of the execution of repairs of Pamban Bridge damaged due to cyclone which joins Rameshwaram with mainland TamilNadu. Sreedharan finished the job in just 46 days while the time given was 3 months’ from his boss who was given 6 months target by the Railways.
Later on, Sreedharan was put in-charge for the implementation, Planning and design of Calcutta Metro, India’s first metro, thereby bringing in modern technology in public transport into India.
It was not just the Rails where he excelled, he was also instrumental in making the first ship of Cochin Shipyard limited. Sreedharan joined Cochin shipyard when it was under-efficient, and was delaying its first ship project for a long time. He turned the fortunes of the Shipyard and made sure that the first ship would be built while he is still in office. Under his able guidance and leadership, Cochin Shipyard came out with its first ship, MV Rani Padmini.
Konkan Railways, one of the most difficult railway project to be constructed in the world with 93 tunnels for a length of 82 KMs and over 150 bridges, was finished by him as its CMD. The entire project was finished without major costs and time delays. It was featured in the Extreme Railway Program by Chris Tarrant.
Delhi Metro, the name runs synonymous with E. Sreedharan. His tenure as Managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is considered highly successful and there by earning him the name “Metro Man”. He was there with Delhi Metro project for a whopping 16 years. He finished the sectoral targets of project on or before the stipulated target time.
Sreedharan also acted as the Principal advisor for Kochi Metro Rail project which was unveiled on 17th June 2017 by Prime Minister of India. He is also the chief advisor for the Lucknow Metro Project, advisor for Jaipur metro, and recently roped in for the proposed metro projects in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
For his exemplary services towards public transport E. Sreedharan was honoured with many national and international awards. He was awarded Padma Shri by government of India in 2001 followed by Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) by the government of France (2005). Also, Padma Vibhushan was awarded to him in the year 2008 by the government of India, and Rotary International for the sake of Honour Award in the year 2013.
