Diwali, the twinkling time of the year, celebration of lights on the darkest night of the darkest period. Diwali indicates the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. On this auspicious occasion, we lit our houses with diyas to celebrate the victory of good over evil. It is believed that the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi Devi, enters the house that is pure, clean and bright. We wait for this day to light diyas and to decorate the home, to have delicious sweets and warm wishes and to light patakhey and sparklers.
Of course, this is the most exciting time and simultaneously dangerous time too. Usage of the fireworks in an inappropriate way is the most common cause of mishaps during Diwali. I am thankful to my parents who protected me all these years. They offered me the fireworks that suit my age. Every year, one day before Diwali my parents take some time and advise me and my cousins the following safety measures and precautions. To have a safe and happy Diwali lets take some precautions and safety tips.
Purchase your Patakhey at right place – Purchase the firecrackers at legal manufacturers or from licensed and reliable sellers who provide you with good quality crackers. Good quality firecrackers reduce the risk of danger. After purchasing fireworks store them in a box or away from fire sources. Before bursting the fireworks go through the instructions carefully.
Festive Costume – As it is festive time you may prefer to have an ethnic dress which is made by synthetic fabrics but at the time of bursting crackers prefer to wear the cotton clothes that avoid your clothes getting on fire. Always cover your feet with shoes to prevent feet injuries. Never prefer synthetic fabrics such as nylon, polyester and lose dresses that easily catch fire.
Burst your crackers at the right place – Always chose an open area or out of the house to burst fireworks, never burst them in inside the house places. Lit the crackers far away from where people and vehicles are gathered and parked at a distance, light a cracker from arm’s lengths distance. Never be too close to the firework while you are bursting them. While you lit the rockets make sure that they face towards the sky and not towards the window or roadside. Avoid cracking fireworks on roads to prevent accidents. Always offer safer fireworks to children and avoid giving them the fireworks that explode. Never examine the crackers that were lit but not burst as it was dangerous instead lit up a new one to avoid risk. Remember these tips while you are playing with fireworks.
Instructing Children – Never forget to explain the usage of the fireworks to children. Explain to them regarding the usage of the fireworks and the right way of disposing of them. Instruct them about the safety measures and precautions before they burst them. Always make your presences while kids lit up the crackers and other fireworks. Never leave children alone while they are bursting the crackers.
Emergency – Always fill few buckets of water and placed them nearby in case of an emergency. In case of fire, accidents arrange few fire extinguishers and inform immediately to the local fire station.
First Aid Kit – Maintain a mini first aid kit in your home, in case of any injuries treatment is provided instantly at your home itself.
Pet Safety – Always ensure that no pets harmed while you are firing the crackers in open areas. Do not leave your pets alone and keep them away from firecrackers. Always remember that your celebration should not trouble other living creatures.
Sensitivity –Celebrate your festival with utmost care and sensitivity. Use the firecrackers that do not create much noise this can be the first step towards being sensitive to your neighbours. Too much noise pollution can be harmful to everyone. We all are aware that cracking fireworks causes air and noise pollution so, avoid bursting them in busy areas.
Spread Awareness – Spread the safety tips to people who are not aware of these tips and instructions so, that we can ensure a safe Diwali for all of them.
Discarding used fireworks – After bursting the crackers dispose of the firecrackers immediately and carefully. You can put them in a bucket full of water or put sand on them to put out its heat.
We celebrate the festival with joy and happiness. Don’t turn your festive day to a sad one just by being careless at the time of bursting crackers. So, this Diwali let’s have a safe and happy Diwali. Diwali is not just a celebration of light, it’s a celebration of our inner light.
